Every day we are inevitably confronted with the subject of rubbish. The German demands on waste separation can be daunting for people who have recently come to Germany. We have therefore put together the following pages of important information on this subject, to ease the orientation - so that your waste does not become unmanageable.

In order to protect the environment and use resources sparingly, rubbish in Germany is collected separately so that it can be recycled, for example:

• Organic waste (bio-waste) is composted.
• Waste paper is processed into new paper products.
• Used glass is melted down and remade into bottles and jars.
• Scrap metal is also processed into new metal products.
• Plastic packaging material bearing the Green Dot is either materially recycled or converted into energy.

In the grey garbage bins, only waste that cannot be recycled is collected.

Separate collection is taken very seriously in Paderborn with approximately 60 percent of all waste being recycled.
